Drieteenstrandlopers - Sanderlings

Op dit moment zitten er weer veel Drieteenstrandlopers langs de kust. Door hun gedrag zijn het zeer fotogenieke vogeltjes. Ze zijn niet al te schuw waardoor je als je rustig blijft afwachten leuke foto's kunt maken. Ze zitten echter zelden stil; het blijft dus een uitdaging om een goede foto te maken. Met de stormachtige wind die er af en toe staat vormen ze groepen waarbij ze achter elkaar schuilen. De voorste strandlopers die de meeste wind vangen zie je vervolgens weer naar achteren rennen om aan te sluiten in de luwte; het blijven grappige vogeltjes.

At the moment there are a lot Sanderlings along the coast. Because they are very active birds its hard to get nice pictures. With the occasional stormy winds they try to form groups where they hide behind each other. The front Sanderlings that catch most wind leave the group to rejoin the group from behind; they are funny birds to watch.

The summer Blues - Icarusblauwtje

In de laatste dagen van de zomer hoorde ik over een slaapplaats van Icarusblauwtjes. Op slechts 10 minuten fietsen van huis vond ik de slaapplaats van een stuk of 30 blauwtjes. Nu was het wachten op het juiste moment om een mooie foto te maken. Uiteindelijk kon ik bij zonsopkomst (met mist) en bij zonsondergang leuke foto's maken. Met name de zonsondergang gaf ook nog gelegenheid om te experimenteren met invulflits. Zo ontstond een leuke serie die meteen het einde markeerde van een mooie, lange zomer.

At the last days of summer I heard about a sleepingplace of Common Blues butterflies. Just 10 minutes by bike from home I found 30 of them sleeping. Now I had to return at the right time to make a decent picture. Eventually I could make some nice pictures at sunrise (with fog) and at sunset. Especially the sunset also gave opportunities to experiment with fill flash. This created a great series that also marked the end of a beautiful, long summer.

Frankrijk-France

Ook dit jaar zijn we naar de Franse Alpen afgereisd. De nadruk voor de fotografie lag echter nu veel meer op macro-opnamen. Vorig jaar waren het vooral landschappen en hagedissen. Gelukkig kon de mist ook een goede bijdrage leveren aan het maken van wat meer bijzondere opnamen. Hierbij een aantal macro-platen van de vele mooie dingen die ik ben tegengekomen. Een van de hoogtepunten vond ik toch wel de grote Muskusboktor die ik in de mist kon fotograferen. Door een nieuwe manier van flitsen komt ook de mist leuk naar voren.

This year we traveled to the French Alps. The emphasis for photography was now much more macro shots. Last year it was mainly landscapes and lizards. Fortunately, the fog also made a good contribution to making some more special shots. Here are some macro-photos of the many beautiful things I've come across. One of the highlights I found to be the major Musk Longhorn Beetle that I could photograph in the fog. A new way of using my flash also made the fog more visible.

Visdiefjes-Common Tern

Soms kom je onverwacht op een plek die een leuke kans op een foto geeft. Zo was ik op Sail Den Helder en liep ik over een terrein van de marine dat normaal afgesloten is. Daar bleek een flinke kolonie Visdiefjes te zitten met jongen op een terrein waar hekken omheen stonden. Ze zaten wel vrij dichtbij de weg en waren goed te fotograferen mits je op voldoende afstand bleef. Het was een af en aan vliegen met gevangen visjes voor de jongen. Dat leverde leuke vluchtbeelden op. Maar ook de jongen zelf zijn zeer fotogeniek. Ik wisselde af met de Canon 5D en 7D en kon uiteindelijk met leuke plaatjes thuiskomen. Twee dagen later was het terrein weer afgesloten voor publiek.

Sometimes you come unexpectedly in a place that gives great opportunities for nice pictures. So I was at Sail Den Helder and I ran across an area of the Navy that is normally closed. There was a large colony of Common Terns on a field surrounded by fences. They were however quite close to the road and could be photographed quite well if you kept enough distance. It was back and forth flying with little fish for their young. That led to some nice flight images. But the young terns are very photogenic themselves. I alternated with the Canon 5D and 7D and could end up coming home with nice pictures. Two days later the area was closed to the public again.

Terschelling

In juni zijn we met de fotoclub naar Terschelling geweest voor een weekeinde. Hoewel het vrij koud was en niet bepaald zonnig hebben we toch leuke opnames kunnen maken. Zo werkten de konijnen aardig mee, net als de orchideen (Kleine keverorchis (Neottia cordata)). Met name op vrijdagavond konden we nog leuke landschapsfoto's maken. Al met al hebben we een leuke tijd gehad en weinig slaap.

At the beginning of June we went for a weekend to Terschelling with the photography club. Although it was quite cold and not sunny at all we could collect some nice shots over the weekend. The rabbits made great subjects and also the orchids (Lesser Twayblades (Neottia cordata)) were very nice. Especially on Friday we could make some nice landscape pictures. All in all we had a great time and little sleep.

Spring and backlight

Nu de winter eindelijk ten einde is, is het tijd voor de jonge vogels en spelende hazen. Dit jaar heb ik geprobeerd meer te doen met tegenlicht. Natuurlijk zijn de jonge ganzen dan mooie oefenonderwerpen. Het beeld van de jonge ganzen is nog niet helemaal wat ik in mijn hoofd heb, maar het komt een eind in de richting. De opname van de haas die zit te kijken naar twee andere hazen die aan het spelen zijn is al beter. Hoe dan ook, het levert andere beelden op als je er 's avonds op uit gaat en dat smaakt naar meer.

At last the winter has ended and it's time for young birds and playing hares. This year I tried to do more with backlight. Of course the young geese are a great subject. The image below is not yet what I had in mind, but it is a nice try. The hare in backlight is looking at two other hares who are playing in the background. That one is already better. Anyway, getting out in the evening gives me other kind of pictures and tastes for more.

Iceland Jokulsarlon

Een van de meest indrukwekkende plaatsen op IJsland is het ijsmeer Jokulsarlon. Vanaf de gletsjer breken stukken ijs af. Via het meer drijven ze de zee op waar ze door de golfslag weer op het strand worden gespoeld. Door het zeewater worden de blauwe ijsbrokken gepolijst en daardoor krijg je hele mooie ijsvormen op het zwarte lavastrand. Naast de mooie ijsbrokken is Jokulsarlon ook een verzamelplek voor zeehonden. Zowel de gewone als de grijze zeehond zoekt er naar voedsel. Toen ik er was trof ik ook een springende zeehond aan, die ik midden in zijn sprong kon vastleggen. Door de veelheid aan mooie onderwerpen is het moeilijk om een bepaald onderdeel eruit te pikken. Toch is het zaak je ergens op te concentreren en het juiste licht te benutten.

One of the most impressive places in Iceland is the ice lagoon Jokulsarlon. From the glacier pieces of ice break off. Through the lagoon the ice-chunks find their way out to sea where they are thrown back on the beach by the waves. The ice chunks are being polished by the seawater and therefore you can find very nice ice sculptures on the black lava beach. Besides the beautiful ice chunks Jokulsarlon is also a meeting place for seals. Both ordinary and gray seal are looking for food. When I was there I also met a jumping seal, which I could capture by camera. Because of the multitude of beautiful subjects, it is difficult to pick out a one subject. However, it is important to focus and make use of the right light.

Iceland

Van 1 tot en met 7 maart was ik samen met Ingeborg op IJsland. Een prachtig land waar je niet snel uit gefotografeerd bent. Natuurlijk hebben we de toeristische hoogtepunten bezocht, zoals Geysir, de Blue Lagoon en vele watervallen. Maar met name het ijsmeer Jokulsarlon en de omgeving van Vik waren fotografisch het meest interessant. De eerste dag troffen we gelijk in de buurt van Reykjavik het Noorderlicht. Het was even afzien in de kou, maar om 12 uur 's nachts kregen we een aardige lichtshow voorgeschoteld. Ik zal in een volgend blog nog wat uitgebreider ingaan op de foto kansen bij Jokulsarlon. Voor nu een paar opnamen van het Noorderlicht en watervallen.

From 1 to 7 March I was with Ingeborg in Iceland. A beautiful country where you are not easily tired photographing. Of course we visited the tourist highlights, including Geysir, The Blue Lagoon and many waterfalls. But especially the ice lake Jokulsarlon and the vicinity of Vik were photographically the most interesting. The first day we encountered the Northern Lights near Reykjavik. It was just suffering in the cold, but at 12 o'clock at night we got presented a nice light show. In a later blog I will have a more extensive look at the photo opportunities at Jokulsarlon. For now, a few shots of the Northern Lights and waterfalls.

Strandjutten - Beachcombing

Op het strand is altijd wel iets leuks te fotograferen. Zijn er geen vogels of interessante luchten, dan zijn er wel leuke details te fotograferen. Deze keer zocht ik naar mooie patronen in het zand. En die heb ik gevonden! Met name de patronen die doen denken aan bomen zijn zeer fraai. Het was gelijk ook een goede gelegenheid om de 5D mark II goed uit te proberen. Thuis gekomen is het dan zaak alle apparatuur goed schoon te maken om schadelijke inwerking van zand te voorkomen. Fotograferen aan het strand is leuk, maar de schoonmaak erna helaas wat minder...

On the beach is always something fun to photograph. Even if there are no birds or interesting skies, there always are some nice details to photograph. This time I looked for beautiful patterns in the sand. And I've found them! In particular, the patterns reminiscent of trees are very beautiful. Also it was a good opportunity for testing the 5D mark II. Coming home after a photography session its very important to clean all equipment to prevent damage from sand. Shooting at the beach is nice, but the cleaning afterwards unfortunately less ...

Wilde zwanen - Whooper swans

Afgelopen weekeinde waande ik mij even in Japan, Hokkaido om precies te zijn. Ook daar overwinteren Wilde Zwanen en bevinden ze zich in warmer water waaruit de waterdamp omhoog trekt. Door de langdurige vorstperiode waren heel veel sloten en plassen dichtgevroren. De laatste open plekken waren dan ook druk bezet. Zo vonden we ook deze plas waarin heel wat Wilde en Knobbelzwanen zaten. Doordat het windstil was hingen er flinke mistflarden boven het water. Daarom heb ik de zwanen vanuit een tegenlicht situatie gefotografeerd. De zwanen waren niet echt actief en pas toen er flinke groepen recreanten door het gebied trokken werden ze wat alerter. De actiemomenten heb ik vastgelegd met de Canon 7D en de 500mm. De groepsopnamen, waarbij het lijkt alsof de Wilde Zwanen de Knobbelzwanen weg willen sturen zijn gemaakt met de 5D Mark II. Zo blijkt maar weer dat je zelfs op plekken dichtbij (Castricum) je het gevoel kan hebben ver in het buitenland te zitten.

Last weekend I imagined myself in Japan, Hokkaido to be exact. In Hokkaido Wild Swans also hibernate in warmer water with fog. Due to the prolonged period of frost many ditches and ponds were frozen. The last open spaces were thus busy. We found this lake at Castricum with many Whooper and Mute Swans. Because there was no wind mist hung over the water. Therefore I photographed the swans from a backlight situation. The swans were not very active and only when a large group of pedestrians walked by, they were somewhat more alert. The action moments I captured with the Canon 7D and 500mm. The group shots, where it looks like the Whooper Swan wants to send away the Mute Swans, were captured with the 5D Mark II. It appears again that even in places close by (Castricum) you feel you are far abroad.

IJs-IJsselmeer

De winter heeft alsnog doorgezet. Een flinke periode met vorst maakt het weer interessant om erop uit te trekken. De rietkragen bij het IJsselmeer zijn dan altijd leuk om te bezoeken. Zeker als het flink waait. Dan zorgt het opspattend water voor mooie ijssculpturen. Deze keer probeerde ik niet alleen de mooie ijsvormen vast te leggen, maar ook het opspatten van het water. Met 1 foto het hele verhaal vertellen valt nog niet mee. Bijgaand twee redelijk geslaagde versies waarbij zowel de ijsvormen als het opspatten van het water te zien zijn. Aan het eind van de twee uur fotograferen was ik zelf ook al bedekt met een aardig laagje ijs.

The winter continued in january. A considerable period of frost made it interesting again to get out fot photo's. At these circumstances the reeds at the IJsselmeer-lake are always fun to visit. Especially when it's quite windy: the splashing water forms beautiful ice sculptures. This time I tried not only to photograph the beautiful ice forms, but also the proces of splashing water. To tell this story in one picture is not easy. Here are two pictures which are reasonably successful in telling the story with both the ice shapes and the splashing of the water. At the end of the photography session I was also covered with a thin layer of ice.
